3 Expert Approved Tips for Good Wedding Hair

By Arden Fanning Andrews

There are a lot of balls to juggle in the lead up to your wedding, but having good hair is not one that should be overlooked or de-prioritized. If you’re working with a stylist or trust yourself to create a lasting look for the trip down the aisle, there are some things you should keep in mind in the months and weeks ahead of the wedding as well as on the day-of. Lorin Van Zandt, founder of MISSIO Hair and a seasoned hair stylist with more than 20 years of experience, shares her three tips when it comes to wedding hair preparation and perfect day-of styling.

A few months ahead of the wedding . . .
“When selecting a hair style, think about the full look that you are wanting to achieve with your dress, accessories, jewelry, and hair altogether,” Lorin says. “It’s easy to make the mistake of choosing a hairstyle that’s very pretty, with lots of intricate details, yet when paired with everything else, feels overdone. Simplicity in a few areas allows for statements to be made in others. Consider it a balance. Pro tip: Try on your dress, accessories, and jewelry altogether on the day of your trial run with hair, to be sure you love what you see!”

A few weeks ahead of the wedding . . .
“Practice makes perfect, so be sure you give that desired style a test run a few weeks before the wedding,” she explains. “Months away from your big day can leave too large of a gap (and more time for you to change your mind). Lorin recommends doing it only a few weeks in advance, as hair color, length, and texture will all be much closer what you’ll actually have on the big day. This not only allows for you to have your thoughts sorted out, but also ensures the style stays fresh in the the stylist’s mind.”

On the day of the wedding . . .
“Make sure your hair is prepped and ready! Believe it or not, day-dirty hair actually creates the best foundation for long-lasting updos and wedding styles,” Lorin notes. “Freshening at the roots is all you need to do. Choose a dry shampoo that’s not too gritty, but absorbs oil and provides light volume, like MISSIO Hair’s Coconut Cleansing Powder. Preparing your hair with this product also creates a great foundation for bobby pins and other accessories to stay in place, so you can party all night!”
