Ever since Prince Harry proposed to Meghan Markle, our collective belief in fairy tales has skyrocketed. Therefore, it’s no surprise to see this newfound love of “happily ever afters” reflected on this season’s bridal runways, too. Several designers, such as Monique Lhuillier, admitted they were thinking of Markle when designing their collections this year, and although he didn’t explicitly mention her name, it’s clear Elie Saab had a princess in mind for his spring 2019 line.

Almost all of his 24 new looks were large-skirted ball gowns made for making a grand entrance—it’s no wonder he chose the penthouse at the Plaza for his presentation. There were the signature Saab details too, like the intricate beading, the hand-sewn lace, and the layers upon layers of tulle. If they sometimes seem larger than life, that’s because that’s precisely what they are—Saab’s dresses can easily take up a room of their own. And while the dresses might not be for everyone, we say, in an age when a divorced, biracial, American actress can win over the heart of a British prince in line to the throne, why not indulge in a little fantasy?
