Dress The Part: Shop the Looks of The March Sisters in Little Women

By Alexandra Macon

When the trailer for Greta Gerwig’s Little Women dropped last week, we were smitten upon first viewing. Truth be told, we then went on to re-watch it about 20 more times. Not just because Timothée Chalamet is gorgeous and cast perfectly as Laurie, the boy next door, but because of the fashion, all curated by costume designer Jacqueline Durran, and the unabashedly feminist message. It’s fall dressing at its finest, and we love the strong characters wearing these beautiful clothes!

The film, which is based on the 1868 novel by Louisa May Alcott, follows the March sisters—Jo (Saoirse Ronan), Meg (Emma Watson), Amy (Florence Pugh), and Beth March (Eliza Scanlen)—along with their mother Marmee (Lauren Dern), and their calls-it-like-it-is Aunt March (Meryl Streep). Jo, of course, is a stubborn tomboy and aspiring writer who is working on a novel about how she and her sisters are determined to live their lives on their own terms.

“Make it short and spicy,” an editor advises. “And if the main character is a girl, make sure she’s married at the end.”

Jo is out to prove women are more than just wives. “Women, they have minds and they have souls as well as just hearts,” Ronan’s Jo says in the trailer. “And they’ve got ambition and they’ve got talent as well as just beauty. And I’m so sick of people saying that love is just all a women is fit for.” We may be a wedding inspiration website, but we couldn’t agree more.
