Karl Lagerfeld, one of the most iconic fashion designers of our time, has died in Paris at the age of 85. A legend in the industry, Lagerfeld was most famous for his role as creative director of Chanel, a position he held for over three decades. The Chanel show has always been one of the biggest draws at Paris Fashion Week, closing the season in spectacular fashion. His recent couture extravaganzas transported attendees with over-the-top, out of this world set design unlike any other: He staged a casino, a French supermarket, a sandy beach, and once even brought a glacier from Scandinavia inside the Grand Palais.

In keeping with an unspoken tradition at couture shows, most of his couture collections ended with a model walking down the runway in a fantastical wedding dress. Never one to simply stick with tradition as it stands, Lagerfeld put his own twist on it and consistently pushed the envelope, presenting all kinds of unconventional brides, including a brocade embellished maternity wedding dress, and just this past January, a diamond-encrusted bridal swimsuit paired with a veiled swim cap. Below, we take a look back at some of his most breathtaking designs, which continue to be a source of bridal inspiration to this day.
