Forget About a Standard Wedding Photo Booth And Try This Instead

Last Saturday, Chrissy Teigen threw husband John Legend an epic James Bond-themed 40th birthday bash. Event planner Lisa Vorce, who also planned John and Chrissy’s 2013 Lake Como wedding, helped create a Casino Royale setting for the evening, where guests showed up in their black tie best and took photos in an elaborate photo booth, which was clearly a hit at the party. Even John couldn’t stop raving about it, giving it a shout out in the few pictures he shared on social media. “So good to be surrounded by family and loved ones. I had the time of my life,” he wrote. “And the photo booth? The greatest of all time (in the Instagram era, that’s like 90% of party planning, right?)”

The popular photo booth was the work of Scenario Photo, a company founded by former actor John Ganun, which takes the standard photo booth to the next level. Instead of cramping everyone into a box and giving them props and wigs, Scenario Photo creates custom sets tailored to each event and then photographs guests in flawless lighting and fun backdrops. “I thought everyone should get to experience being in a professional shoot once,” said Ganun over the phone. “Being on a real set, with real lighting, and directed by a real photographer.”

A favorite amongst celebrities, Ganun has worked on events for Drew Barrymore, Katy Perry, and John and Chrissy, and is frequently hired to photograph birthdays, Halloween and Christmas parties, and his share of weddings. “We did one where we featured a beautiful large swing, which was actually a sofa that we sawed the legs off,” he explains. “The couple’s color scheme was purple and white, so we decorated the ropes of swing with purple and white flowers all over. People had fun with that one.”

For those interested in featuring a Scenario Photo set at a wedding reception, here’s how it works: At least six weeks before an event, John and his team will work with their client to come up with a concept that fits in with the party’s theme, or in the case of a wedding, that works with the decor. His team comes up with any number of options, from upside down rooms to celestial-themed backdrops to floral wonderlands. “Sometimes my sets look very loud and brash, but of course depending on the event we can also do something pretty and sedate,” Ganun adds. Then, a few days before the event, they’ll build out the set and come the big day, a team of seven people will handle every step of the process on site. Once photos have been taken, guests can review their shots at two viewing stations and then Scenario Photo will print and email them their favorite 8 – 10 photos on the spot. “Then they can do anything they want with their photos; share them, frame them,” John adds. “They’re totally their own.” What’s a better party gift than that?
