An Almost Too Good To Be True Herend Giveaway

Herend Penguins

We’ll be the first to admit we love us some old lady chic. Hermes head-wraps, vintage Limoge floral patterned plates, and porcelain Herend figurines—these are a few of our favorite things! So, we’re thrilled to share that today we’re giving away the last item in that list. Yes, you read right . . . we’ve teamed up with the storied brand Herend to send one lucky person the adorable bride and groom penguins pictured above in the color of their choosing (valued at $590). These figures are so cute we’ve actually seen them used as cake toppers at a wedding in St. Barth’s! Before we move onto how to enter to win, we thought it would be fun to take quick look back at the history of Herend and explore why their figurines are so collectible.

Founded in 1826, Herend Porcelain in Hungary is one of the world’s largest ceramic factories. In the mid-19th century, it was purveyor to the Habsburg Dynasty and affluent aristocratic customers throughout Europe. Queen Victoria dined on it, and it’s said that Princess Diana loved receiving pieces in her Christmas stocking year after year. Prince William and Catherine Middleton were also gifted a special Herend Porcelain present from the country of Hungary when they married. Hollywood royalty is just as smitten—Harrison Ford and Paul Newman both count themselves as collectors . . . even action hero Arnold Schwarzenegger is a fan!

The trademark fishnet motif—which is most popular in the United States—originated in 1874 when an artist inspired by a Chinese plate’s fish scale design painted it onto a rooster figurine’s breast to imitate feathers. Each piece can take up to 16 hours to paint by hand and is created by a craftsman who has trained for at least three years in order to become qualified. Much like a designer handbag, the final touch is a personal identification number—signed by the artist—authenticating that the product is a legit Herend original. Now onto contest logistics . . .
