There’s something magical about the biannual New York Fashion Week. Sure, the allure may fade when you consider the jammed subways, long lines all throughout Soho, and influencers taking up the entirety of the sidewalk for a selfie. But there is nowhere else in the world you’d rather be to see the newest trends in fashion firsthand and attend a show. . . Or watch from afar online. Who else has been pouring over content from the Tommy Hilfiger show in a decommissioned Staten Island Ferry? Or wishing they were invited to Ralph Lauren’s Hamptons soirée with First Lady Jill Biden and Tom Hiddleston in attendance? Surely not just us!
Always up-to-date on what’s in vogue, OTM Styling Director Grace Givens spotted a few recurring themes on the runways this year. We asked her to share her favorite ways to be on trend. Consider this your TLDR of New York Fashion Week. No matter where you are in the world, you can bring the latest NYFW looks to your own OOTDs this spring. No catwalk necessary.
1. Sequin Service
We’re calling it. Long after your sparklers fade out on New Year’s Day at midnight, you will find everyone still wearing sequins on special (and even everyday) occasions. That’s right. Get ready to shimmer and shine in 2025. From Ralph Lauren to the Row, an array of designers are leaning into all that glitters.
2. Appliqué Adornment
At once elegant and whimsy, appliqué adds texture and depth to a dress, as seen in the Carolina Herrera and Sandy Liang shows. It’s a charming detail that makes a great piece all the more spectacular. (Not to mention, fun!)
3. Free-Flowing Dresses
Bridgerton brought a Regency-inspired resurgence of hip-less silhouettes, and this year’s NYFW is pushing looser shapes. So many designers like Phillip Lim and Ulla Johnson embraced free-flowing dresses on the catwalk. What’s not to love about a forgiving and flattering silhouette?
4. Lilac Lavenders
Floral colors for spring? Groundbreaking. But this surprisingly versatile shade of purple is breaking new ground on the runways this season.
5. Cut Outs
ALAÏA and Michael Koss took the plunge with cut out silhouettes. We love the subversive fashion statement of an exposed collarbone, side, and back. Provocative and unexpected, cutouts are a standout style for warmer weather ahead.
6. Buttercup Yellow
Not everyone can pull off this color. . . Or can they? Maybe it’s a matter of finding the right shade. Brands like Sergio Hudson, Tibi, and Simkhai showcased different hues of buttercup yellow.
7. Fringe Factor
At the intersection of western flair and retro 70s glamour, you’ll find fringe. This NYFW, designers like Ralph Lauren and Proenza Schouler couldn’t get enough of it.
