Got married not too long ago and already miss the big day? Well, vow renewals are something to look forward to, especially when it’s time to celebrate a big milestone like a 10 year anniversary! Candice Miller, founder of Mama & Tata (a lifestyle resource for mothers living in NYC and L.A.) and co-founder of womenswear collection Black Iris, hosted a vow renewal for just that reason last week. (Check out her quintessential New York City wedding here.) “My husband and I have been married for 10 years, and I wanted to celebrate how much that means to both of us. We never said our own vows at our wedding, so we had a lot of material, and we needed to put it out there!” she says.
She and her husband, Brandon, hosted the day at their home in the Hamptons, with most of the action in the backyard. To help plan her A Midsummer Night’s Dream-themed soirée, she hired Keren Precel from Simply Perfect Events, and tapped Anastasia from Sag Harbor Florist for florals, Decco by Party Up Productions for lighting, and Joanna Siegel for food. Much like a wedding, the invite list was filled with family and close friends. “I wanted everyone there to enjoy each other and celebrate our love, and I was confident each person on my guest list would do just that. They didn’t disappoint!” Candice says.
For her vow renewal look, she went to the Brooklyn vintage show A Current Affair and found a vintage Scaasi dress from The Kit Vintage, based in L.A. “The pinks, blues, and golds combined are my family’s favorite colors, so I felt it was destined for this occasion,” Candice says.
Unlike at her wedding, ten years prior, Candice had her daughters with her to help celebrate. They were excited to help decorate tables and handle the flowers. “My daughters loved to help serve drinks and greet all of our guests, they just loved to be a part of the fun! They also were the ones I practiced reading my vows to,” she says.
Guests arrived to a romantic setting on the grass by the pool, with fairy lights strung up over two long tables set with floral tablecloths, light blue candles, and flower arrangements made with peonies, roses, and more. It was truly a sight to behold. Once the sun set, the candlelight made it extra special.
At the ends of the tables, vows were spoken by the couple, in front of all of their guests. Candice’s husband’s speech was the highlight of her night. “It was exactly him. He made everyone laugh out loud, as he typically does. He totally crushed it and made me cry by the end with his authentic, raw emotion, and romantic words.”
As the night drew to a close, Candice’s cousin spontaneously jumped in the pool, filled with candles and flowers. “I think at the time, he thought he was going to get everyone to join him, but instead, we let him go solo and cheered him on!” she says. Then, guests danced on the lawn for the remainder of the evening, as the DJ spun track after track. “Everyone should renew their vows!” Candice suggests for anyone contemplating. “It was the best thing I ever did, being able to relive the greatest day of my life with the family we created present!”
