It’s almost 2020! Let’s get political—kidding! But we are wishing Senator Kamala Harris a Happy Five Year Anniversary! And in true Over The Moon fashion, we’re taking a look back at her Santa Barbara wedding to entertainment lawyer Douglas Emhoff.
The two met on a blind date, set up by PR consultant Chrisette Hudlin, while Harris was serving as California’s attorney general. After a little more than a year of dating, Douglas got down on one knee in her apartment.
Only four short months later, they held their ceremony on Friday, August 22nd, at the Santa Barbara Courthouse. According to The San Francisco Chronicle, Kamala’s sister, Maya, performed the wedding, while a cellist played.
The bride wore a gold dress, by a California designer, and they exchanged vows they had written themselves. Kamala’s niece, also read from Maya Angelou’s poem “Touched by an Angel.”
Honoring each other’s cultural traditions, a flower garland was placed around Douglas, as is common in Indian weddings, and he broke the glass to seal the deal, as per the Jewish custom. The newlyweds had their first dance to “Like a Star” by Corinne Bailey Rae. And the two didn’t have a honeymoon.
Kamala posted on her Instagram today to commemorate her anniversary with the caption, “Happy Anniversary to my wonderful husband, @douglasemhoff. Thank you for always being patient, loving, and supportive. Love you Dougie.”
Upon becoming Mr. and Mrs., Kamala gained two stepchildren, Cole (24) and Ella (19), who call her “Momala”—amazing. And the whole family is very supportive of her running for president. Her husband has been the most supportive on social media. How cute is his Twitter page?
Can confirm: We met, fell madly in love (still are), got married and continue to live very happily ever after. ❤️ pic.twitter.com/GxTIaciTAZ
