Morgan Horner and Graham Reeves Calhoun Drury met one night at the well-known watering hole, the Silver Dollar, on Upper King Street in Charleston, and were inseparable after. Four years of dating later, including one year of long-distance between Charleston and New York, and Graham proposed on their favorite corner in the city—Commerce and Barrow St.
Since Charleston is where the two met and fell in love, they decided to host their wedding there. It was important to Morgan that the venues not be far apart, so she stuck to looking for downtown spots. The Gibbes Museum had just reopened after renovations and was somewhere unique that the couple loved. St. Philip’s Church was only a five minute walk away, so it was perfect. “I wanted something classic, sleek, and elegant but most importantly something different than the typical Charleston wedding that you see time and time again,” Morgan explains. To design and plan the event, as well as produce and skillfully execute it, Sweetgrass Social stepped in from the get-go to elevate and bring the bride’s vision to life. “The team truly poured their heart into it, and everything went off without a hitch.”
When shopping for her dress, the bride-to-be knew she wanted something timeless yet unique. She found her look at the Bridal Salon at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York; it was the third dress she tried on. “I chose the Marchesa ‘Daffodil’ dress because it was so effortlessly romantic with a touch of sexy but still a very timeless silhouette,” she says. The removable cape was a plus too! For her “something borrowed,” the bride wore her mother’s diamond earrings. Meanwhile, the groom opted for a custom Ermenegildo Zegna tuxedo, while the bridesmaids wore mix and match Jenny Yoo dresses.
For the ceremony, Pastor Andrew O’Dell gave a beautiful sermon in St. Philip’s Church. “[The church] has so much history and truly feels like you are attending a royal wedding,” Morgan says.
After saying, “I do,” everyone took a short walk to the reception at the museum. The space was decorated romantically with candles, hanging chandeliers and gorgeous florals by On A Limb Florals. “The reception flew by because we were having so much fun!” the bride says. The father-of-the-bride, best man, and maid-of-honor all gave toasts. Morgan’s father’s speech had everyone in tears—“he spent months perfecting it,” she says.
The live band, The Heather Hayes Experience, kept things energized and Cru Catering took care of the dinner—fried chicken and waffle cones, short rib, and a local white fish. Then, the couple took to the dance floor and had their first dance to the very classic—“The Way You Look Tonight.” After the reception, the newlyweds made their exit in a vintage car that dropped them off at The Dewberry for one night—and the next morning, they were up and out the door early to catch their flight to South Africa and Paris for a honeymoon.
