Mrs. Alice Founder & Creative Director Alice Naylor-Leyland’s Traditional, Chintz-Filled Dream Registry

By Shayna Seid

What makes the perfect registry? Our Dream Registry series answers just that, providing an endless source of inspiration for those putting together their own Over The Moon registries. We enlisted the help of some of our most stylish and in-the-know friends—whether they’re single, engaged, or already married. (Because we’re taking a page from Carrie Bradshaw’s playbook and saying one should be able to register for Manolos no matter what their relationship status!) Peek inside the registries of tastemakers, from editors and stylists to wedding planners and beyond. Your dream registry is just a click away.

Often known as “the original tablescape brand,” Mrs. Alice has just launched their Spring Collection exclusively on Over The Moon! After founder and creative director Alice Naylor-Leyland’s passion for entertaining had repeatedly been showcased from magical Sunday lunches to a 30th birthday that rivals most nuptials, she founded her tablescaping company in 2019 and has since expanded into stylish homewares.

To celebrate the arrival of the latest spring and Easter-forward tabletop, Alice is sharing what’s on her Over The Moon Dream Registry—14 years (this month!) after saying “I do” to Tom Naylor-Leyland, who in addition to being the father of her four children moonlights as the brand’s videographer and creative copywriter (a.k.a. “Mr. Alice”).

“We met at a mutual friend’s party at Stanway House in Gloucestershire when I was 16 and were good friends till we started dating when I was 21,” Alice remembers of how she and Mr. Alice first crossed paths. “Tom eventually asked me to stay with his family in North Wales for the weekend. I think that was his version of a date.”

Two years later, Tom got down on one knee and asked Alice to marry him during their first holiday away together in Santorini. “It came at quite a surprise as I was only 24! Pretty young,” Alice admits. They planned a winter wedding for March 5th at Alice’s mother’s Georgian home in Ham in Wiltshire. The bride wore a Philipa Lepley design, inspired by Grace Kelly’s regal, lace dress. “I honestly love it as much today as I did 14 years ago.”

Today, Alice and Tom are based in Cambridgeshire, where his family has lived since 1502. “But we’re very lucky to be able to get to spend time at a family home up in North Wales too,” she adds. “It’s stunning up there with lots of sheep and mountains.”

As for Alice’s own interiors taste? “I’m afraid I’m not a minimalist,” she shares. “My good friend Poppy Delevingne remarked on seeing our house that she hadn’t seen that much chintz since she’d been to her grandmother’s house. . . I would say my taste is traditional, a mix of 18th and 19th-century furniture and art. I adore old fabric, chintz.”

The creative director decorates her spaces based on one beautiful thing she loves, whether that be de Gournay Wallpaper or a beautiful painting or a Mrs. Alice Ikat Fabric. “Then the room builds itself around that,” Alice explains. “And just like with laying a beautiful table it’s about adding layers.” And when in need of an extra dose of inspiration, she turns to Mrs. Alice Director of Design, Serena Fresson—a.k.a. her mum. “She is also the font of all knowledge on interiors and decorating.”

For her Dream Registry, Alice focused on kitchenware and tabletop. “Studies say that people stay longer around a table that is laid, and so in my opinion, a beautiful tablecloth is a must have,” she states. And she leaves us with important advice for couples making their Over The Moon Registries: “Think long term—what will you still love in 40 years time? These are gifts that you will cherish forever so choose carefully—almost as carefully as when you choose your spouse!”
