It’s a Boy! Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Welcome Their First Child!

By Shayna Seid

In the early hours of Monday, May 6, Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex went into labor with Prince Harry and her mother, Doria Ragland, by her side. Exactly one week after its due date, baby boy Sussex arrived, becoming the first British-American and biracial baby born into the royal family in recent history. “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcomed their firstborn child in the early morning on May 6th, 2019. Their Royal Highnesses’ son weighs 7lbs. 3oz,” read the statement released by Buckingham Palace. “The Duchess and baby are both healthy and well, and the couple thank members of the public for their shared excitement and support during this very special time in their lives. More details will be shared in the forthcoming days.”

An elated Prince Harry couldn’t help but gush the news to reporters outside of Frogmore Estate. ”It’s the most amazing experience I could ever imagine,” he said. “How any woman does what they do is beyond comprehension.”

Buckingham Palace had already expressed the couple wished to keep any news related to the birth private, until they have celebrated “privately as a new family,” meaning it could be days before we find out the baby’s name. In the past, it has taken as long as 10 days until a royal baby’s name is announced. The baby, who is seventh in line to the throne, will most likely not have a surname but a lot of other names, like Prince Harry, whose full name is Henry Charles Albert David. Prince William and Kate Middleton’s children use “Cambridge,” their assigned dukedom, as a surname for school, so Harry and Meghan’s child could end up using “Sussex.”

The baby will automatically be a British citizen, but to obtain dual citizenship, the birth will have to be reported to an American consulate.

The Duchess of Sussex’s pregnancy was announced only five months after the royal wedding took place in May.It was announced on April 4 that the couple had officially moved into Frogmore Estate in Berkshire, leaving their two-bedroom Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace in London. The family will reside in their new home, which is around 23 miles west of central London and raise the mini royal there.
