World renowned illustrator and calligrapher Stephanie Fishwick—who impressively hand-wrote all of Gwyneth Paltrow’s hauntingly beautiful wedding invitations—created the custom floral and ribbon-filled “Sky Floral” print for the Over The Moon Exclusive capsule collection with Alexia María, which launched earlier this month. As the collection was created with brides and bridesmaids in mind, it gave Stephanie a chance to think back to her the time right before she and her husband, James Fishwick, tied the knot on September 19, 2009, in Charlottesville, Virginia—where they’re currently based. Luckily for us, she’s giving us a look at what she would register for on Over The Moon, if she were walking down the aisle tomorrow!
The artist describes her aesthetic masterfully as “English traditional on a little acid.” For design inspiration, Stephanie turns to her growing book collection. “Some of my favorites are Billy Baldwin’s Decorates: A Book of Practical Decorating Ideas, Parish-Hadley: Sixty Years of American Design, Vogue Living, and The Perfectly Imperfect Home by Deborah Needleman. I also love my Mario Buatta tome, Fifty Years of American Interior Decoration,” she shares.
Stephanie and James bought a circa 1950s federal-style brick home in 2022, and the two have been adding their personality and working on some modifications ever since. They particularly needed to add an art studio, record storage, and an upgraded laundry room. “The house still has an unfinished basement and attic, so we have some fun projects left to complete in the coming years, when we can,” Stephanie shares, admitting she decorates her spaces “slowly—by necessity.”
When the two met, she was “a recovering minimalist with girly floral quilts and chintzy things,” and his maximalism slowly started to affect her design eye. “We more or less have the same taste now, having both rehabilitated the other’s occasional lapse in taste,” Stephanie laughs.
For Stephanie’s Dream Registry, she spotlights a specific tabletop brand. “I love Zoë de Givenchy’s line Z.d.G.—my Dream Registry would be all of her pieces,” the artist states. Moving from the dining room to the bedroom, Stephanie loves our bedding selection. “We sleep in crisp, cotton percale sheets—these ones with the lace edging by Matouk are so beautiful.”
Stephanie leaves us with her advice for couples making their own Over The Moon Registries for the first time: “We made our registry back when I was 27 years old. I didn’t think I would ever have a need for really nice tableware. Whoopsie!! My tip is to shoot for the moon with your registry. This is the time to do it. We didn’t understand that people would actually buy us all the things on it. We still use the patio furniture set and rice cooker we received, all these years later. And now, I wish we had registered for some of the more traditional items like finer china, coffee and tea service, and special water glasses.”
