Over The Moon’s Guide to Monte Carlo, Monaco

By Liz McDaniel

Mention of the French Riviera tends to conjure images of celebrity playground meets royal hideaway meets Fitzgerald fever dream. But it’s more accessible than one might think. With direct flights to Nice from New York City and Atlanta, Monte Carlo has emerged as an unexpected and desirable destination for weddings, honeymoons, and even bachelor and bachelorette parties. Just the smallest scratch on the gilded surface of the storied Principality that is Monaco reveals a wide array of hotels, pristine beaches, festive clubs, and instagram-ready views. Not to mention a very high ratio of Michelin-starred chefs per square kilometer.

When it comes to all things lavish and wedding-related, one might even say it’s in the water. From Grace Kelly to her granddaughter Charlotte Casiraghi, The House of Grimaldi has long set the standard when it comes to royal weddings. It’s only fitting, then, that the Principality from which they hail should become a coveted destination for all things nuptial. So, if the more typical domestic destinations aren’t what you have in mind, follow the royals lead and head to Monaco, and better yet, it’s most famous quarter, Monte Carlo.

Hotel de Paris Monte-Carlo

Honeymooners, take note. This storied hotel set in a Belle Epoque palace on the Place du Casino has welcomed everyone from the Rockefellers to the guests of Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace, who held their wedding dinner here. A stunning renovation with French architect Richard Martinet in 2014 left no luxury unturned. The rooms themselves boast Murano glass and Italian Calacatta marble. With two Alain Ducasse restaurants and a wine cellar with more than 600,000 bottles, even the most sophisticated culinary standards are sure to be surpassed.

Old world style meets modern amenities at the historic Hotel Hermitage. A Belle Epoque beauty set on a hill overlooking the Mediterranean, it features a glass cupola designed by Gustave Eiffel himself. It’s not hard to imagine a Fitzgerland heroine sipping a campari and soda on the balcony. It also features one of the most renowned spas in Europe, the 71,000 square foot Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo complete with a heated saltwater pool, sauna, and hammam. With its laid back approach to luxury, it’s ideal for those seeking a relaxing bachelorette getaway or a low-key honeymoon.

From the vast indoor pool to the sand-bottomed lagoon to the sea itself, there are plenty of options for swimming or lounging. The Blue Gin offers cocktails and music alongside breathtaking views. For dinner, the two-Michelin starred Blue Bay helmed by chef Marcel Ravin blends Creole and Mediterranean influence in a bright space overlooking the ocean. On the grounds, a sprawling, Mediterranean-style garden designed by Jean Mus beckons. It’s a feast for the senses and the ideal setting to indulge.

Monte-Carlo Beach

These days, privacy is the ultimate luxury, and the Monte-Carlo Beach is ideal for honeymooners looking for a quiet getaway far from the action of Casino Square. Set on the seacoast border of Monaco, the elegant resort and art deco architecture is a nod to the glory days of Monte Carlo and 1930’s glamour. You’ll likely want to hop the shuttle bus into town at least once, but with a private beach, olympic-sized pool, four amazing restaurants, and a renowned spa on property, it’s hardly necessary.

The Old Cabaret de Monte Carlo is now the Monte-Carlo outpost of the beloved Buddha Bar, a glamorous lounge-like restaurant known for its over the top decor and bold Asian flavors. Come for dinner and stay for the two open-air terraces and DJ Papadio Donato behind the booth. Equally suited for a romantic evening for two, or a late night on the town with a large group, Buddha Bar is a must-stop on any trip to Monte Carlo.

This 150-year-old institution recently reopened after a significant renovation, and the result is old world glamour at its best. A timeless brasserie set in the Place du Casino, Cafe de Paris has long been a favorite of royalty, celebrities, locals, and tourists alike. With a new, extensive menu helmed by Head Chef Victor Marion, it’s the ideal spot for a long lunch or a quick coffee before seeing the sights.

Club La Vigie

The picturesque Club La Vigie is set on the tip of the Monte-Carlo Beach Peninsula, with the Mediterranean sea providing an ideal backdrop for summer drinks and daytime celebrations. With an atmosphere that expertly balances exclusive and inviting, it feels special without being stuffy. A delicious menu focuses on shared plates, adding to the convivial vibes. We love it for a breezy afternoon with the bachelorette party or a show-stopping welcome cocktail.

Coya

From the breathtaking scenery to its bold South American flavors and vibrant music, an evening at COYA is a sensory event made for the most festive occasions. Chef Victoria Vallenilla hails from Venezuela by way of the Caribbean and her recipes are a modern take on traditional Peruvian dishes. Take in the views and the lush, rainforest-like setting (if rainforests had velvet banquettes), while an expert mixologist shakes up a specialty cocktail. Reserve for dinner and stay for the late night DJ and party.

L’Hirondelle

A spot on the terrace at L’Hirondelle is one of the most coveted in town, with its panoramic views of Port Hercule and the Rock of Monaco (where the Prince’s palace is located). Set in the Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo, the restaurant offers healthy, Mediterranean dishes designed by Chef Jean-Laurent Basile who favors seasonal local ingredients. It’s ideal for a light, pre-spa lunch or dinner with the in-laws.

A culinary gem on the eighth floor of the Hotel de Paris Monte-Carlo, Le Grill is the vision of new executive chef, Dominique Lory who pays tribute to the Riviera with a menu highlighting seasonal, local produce alongside signature favorites. It’s the ultimate special occasion restaurant with its Michelin-starred pedigree, panoramic views, and a wine list that goes on for days. Impress guests or mark the end of your trip with an evening at Le Grill.

Le Train Bleu

Set in the Casino de Monte-Carlo, Le Train Bleu is an elegant, Belle Epoque reproduction of a restaurant car in the early 1900’s, when the Principality was only accessible by rail. The menu from Head Chef Richard Rubbini is a modern take on gourmet Italian with an emphasis on seafood. The result is a journey to old world Europe at its finest, all within the confines of the casino.

Maona Monte-Carlo

This retro nod to the Riviera glamour of the 1960’s is an open-air summer cabaret with a vibe that’s the epitome of joie de vivre. Think Liza Minneli and Jerry Lewis partying in grand fashion well into the night. From the bar to the dance floor to the terrace and back, it’s the ideal atmosphere for a festive bachelorette or after party.

Pavyllon

A modern, understated restaurant at the Hotel Hermitage Monte-Carloe, Pavyllon is the ultimate in quiet luxury or as Chef Yannick Alléno puts it, “fine dining without the formality.” The  inventive menu highlights the freshest local ingredients with Michelin-starred flare, while guests enjoy endless views from one of the most beautiful terraces in the Riviera. We love it for an intimate dinner with friends or a romantic honeymoon dinner.

This pop-up restaurant on the patio of the Hotel de Paris highlights the flavors of COYA chef Victoria Vallenilla’s youth with bold takes on traditional Venezuelan dishes. Lively decor with beautiful—and highly-instagrammable—frescoes painted by South American artist Viviana Grondona only adds to the festive atmosphere.

Things To Do

The Casino

Built in 1863, the iconic Casino de Monte Carlo founded by Francois Blanc, is an imposing presence with its Belle Epoque architecture and famous facade. An international destination for gaming and entertainment, guests are invited to test their luck at French Roulette, Black Jack, Baccarat, and more. If gambling’s not your thing, channel a glamorous Bond heroine in one of the casino’s picturesque bars.

Private Car Collection of the Prince of Monaco

The Classic Car Collection of H.S.H. The Prince of Monaco dates back to the 1950’s when motoring enthusiast Prince Rainier III began his private collection. In 1993, he decided to put that collection on display, and it recently moved to a new location at Port Hercule where visitors can peruse an impressive array of around 70 vehicles including Formula 1 racing cars and the Chrysler that Prince Rainier had brought from the USA to greet Princess Grace at the port.

Oceanographique Museum

The Oceanographique Museum of Monaco is located on the Monaco Rock, just behind Monaco’s Old Town. From petting sharks to exploring the history of the exhibitions of the museum’s founder, Prince Albert I, to simply taking in the view from the roof, there is something for every type of visitor.

Walk the Harbor

With an area just over two square kilometers, perhaps the best way to take in the beauty of Monaco is on foot. From stunning homes and gardens to breathtaking views of the Mediterranean and some of the world’s most impressive yachts, there is plenty to see as you traverse the harbor. Make your way to the top of the Rock and to the Cathedral of Our Immaculate Lady or the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, where Grace Kelly wed Prince Rainier III on April 19, 1956, and where both are now laid to rest.

Shopping

There is, of course, no shortage of luxury shopping in Monte Carlo. We recommend the Monte-Carlo Shopping Promenade, a cluster of high-end boutiques near the Place du Casino complete with Prada, Chanel, Saint-Laurent, Céline, and Dior, among others.

Monaco Grand Prix

For the uninitiated, the Monaco Grand Prix is a Formula 1 racing event which takes place on the Circuit de Monaco each year, typically on the last weekend of May. Known for its tight corners and stark elevation changes, the Circuit de Monaco is one of the most challenging courses in Formula 1. For spectators and fans, it is the height of prestige and glamour—and a sure fire way to take a bachelor party to the next level.

The Cathedral of Monaco

Visit the site of one of the last century’s most iconic weddings, that between Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier III, where the actress turned princess charmed the world in a gown created by Academy Award–winning costume designer Helen Rose.

Explore the Medieval village of Eze

A beautiful medieval town set high on a hill between Nice and Monaco offers a respite from the excesses of Monte Carlo and some of the best views in the French Riviera. Just 4.5 km west of Monaco, it’s an easy day trip. With fewer gilded facades and more centuries old-stonework, and narrow, cobblestone streets that cling to the side of a cliff, it’s the perfect place to regroup and take in nature at Le Jardin Exotique.

The Ultimate Wedding Venues

Villa La Vigie

If you are channeling Grace Kelly and planning your own wedding of the century, look no further than former Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfeld’s old summer estate, now available for rent. Built in 1902, the Belle Epoque style mansion was lovingly renovated by Lagerfeld after he purchased the property in 1988. The result is a marvel of exquisite details surrounded by gorgeous views. Welcome your guests for the week with cocktails on the 2,500 square foot terrace overlooking the Mediterranean and then whisk them away in an electric car to the Monte Carlo Beach Hotel’s private beach, one of the hotel’s many amenities on offer should you choose to rent the Villa.

Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild

One of the most exclusive venues on the French Riviera, Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild is set in Saint Jean Cap Ferrat overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Built in the early 1900’s and inspired by the palaces of the Italian Renaissance, it’s a breathtaking homage to a bygone era of glamour and opulence. The exquisite pink of the villa set against the deep blues of the sea below sets an unparallelled scene for any wedding.
