7 Laidback Celebrity Brides at their Low-Key Weddings

By Cathleen Freedman

“Lavish,” “extravagant,” “over-the-top” are a few words that come to mind when recalling blowout celebrity weddings. Images of lengthy trains and gargantuan cakes abide, and paparazzi pictures abound.

But there are plenty of celebrities whose weddings are low-key, casual, and—dare we say—imitable. Some celebrity brides re-wore their favorite party dresses and kept their guest lists to a few friends. Pictures of these weddings may only exist from the shared images they released on their personal Instagram accounts. Intimate moments come to mind faster with these celebrations than bigger ones…and that’s part of the reason we love low-key weddings so much.

These brides were trendsetters in more ways than one. Their weddings provide potential insight for someone marrying in a world post-COVID. Think small guest lists, intimate venues, and understated everything-else. Just take a cue from one of these celebrity brides:

Bianca and Mick Jagger

The ultimate cool, casual wedding on the French Riviera. Their ceremony was in the Church of St. Anne, and the activist bride wore a Yves Saint Laurent jacket and skirt. (She opted out of a top for her bridal look! Suited brides who seek an air of mystique, take note…) A low-key reception at Hotel Byblos followed.

Only 75 guests attended, but the quality of their guest list certainly overshines the quantity. Their receiving line included Paul McCartney, Keith Richards, and Brigitte Bardot. We wouldn’t mind writing our wedding thank you notes to those attendees…

Carolyn Bessette and JFK Jr.

For a private couple who was constantly sought out by the paparazzi, a clandestine ceremony was crucial for their wedding day. They married in a small chapel, in front of 35 guests. Their reception at Greyfield Inn followed shortly after. The whole evening was kept a-glow with candlelight.

The story behind the venue is fascinating… From discovering that the chapel was the island’s first African Baptist Church to how some island residents watched the guests arrive, this is an interesting read about the Georgia island and this Kennedy wedding.

Olivia Palermo and Johannes Huebel

Fashion figure Olivia Palermo wore a custom Carolina Herrera cashmere sweater and tulle skirt for her wedding in Bedford, New York. Minimal jewelry and make-up, complete with an easy upswept ponytail, Olivia was the epitome of a laidback and chic bride. She let her “something blue” Manolo Blahnik shoes elevate the casual look. (Yes, just like the ones Carrie Bradshaw wore to her civil ceremony.)

While reminiscing on the day, Olivia stated that “We really wanted to keep this beautiful day very private and special to us and enjoyed the whole day with our family and two friends.”

Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick

Speaking of Carrie Bradshaw, you might be wondering what SJP’s extravagant and glamorous wedding must have been like?

Well, you would be shocked to find out SJP and Matthew Broderick’s 1997 wedding was understated and surprising—even for the guests! They were invited to what they assumed was just a small New York party on a Monday night. It ended up being the couple’s wedding!

The guests went to New York’s Angel Oresanz Synagogue for the ceremony and then sang show tunes until 2:00 a.m. SJP wore a black Morgane Le Fay gown. The color choice had two purposes: one being that she didn’t want to tip off the paparazzi by buying a white gown, and the other being that she “was too embarrassed to get married in white.”

We’re currently wishing we could have been one of those lucky few guests at that brilliant party where Ferris Bueller married soon-to-be Carrie Bradshaw…

Beyoncé and Jay-Z

Only one picture from this day seems to circulate the internet, and it is a sweet image of Beyoncé and Jay-Z walking down the aisle after exchanging vows. You can see Tina Knowles, Beyoncé’s mother, fix her daughter’s train. (Tina even designed the dress!)

The couple married at Jay-Z’s penthouse in NYC in front of 40 guests. There was a strict “no phones allowed.” Considering the couple celebrates their 12th anniversary this year, that meant no BlackBerrys!

And, before you ask, no, the couple did not perform at their own wedding. Instead, they enjoyed the evening and early morning with their guests- reportedly dancing until 5:00 a.m.

Emily Ratajkowski and Sebastian Bear-McClard

The couple’s wedding announcement appeared on Emily’s Instagram with the nonchalant story post of “got married today.”

As fans questioned whether she was joking or not, she posted pictures of her and Sebastian’s New York courthouse wedding day. She wore a deep orange Zara suit that costs around $250, chic black heels, and a hat with a small black veil. Overall, this look could easily go from EmRata’s wedding at the NYC courthouse to an impromptu NYC street style photo shoot!

Keira Knightley and James Righton

Every period drama’s favorite actress forewent the frou-frou corsets and ball gowns for her South France wedding ceremony. She chose a well-loved Chanel dress. Keira said that she had “worn the dress lots. It was [her] something old. And [she] liked not making a big deal about it.”

For her “something new,” Karl Lagerfeld designed a boucle jacket to go along with the frock. She topped the outfit off with Chanel flats and Ray-Ban shades. Unlike most wedding dresses, Keira wore hers again. She added sheer sleeves to the strapless Chanel and donned it at a gala.
