Years after first meeting at a holiday party in Palm Beach, interior designer Annabelle Moehlmann and Maximilian Moehlmann wed on August 20, 2016, in East Hampton. Fun Fact: Over The Moon VP of Merchandising Emilie Ghilaga Carlisle was a bridesmaid! Annabelle gracefully walked down the aisle and exchanged vows in a Carolina Herrera dress. Since then, she reveals that even though she and Maximilian have specific taste in design, they’re somehow aligned ninety-five percent of the time—a designer’s dream come true. More than eight years after their I dos, she’s looking at back at her wedding photos and sharing her Dream Over The Moon Registry.
The New York City–based designer defines her aesthetic as “elegant, collected, and timeless” and says that decorating her own and her clients’ spaces is “an intuitive process.” She goes on to share: “I like to take cues from the spaces themselves—their history, the mood they give off, what somehow feels right as a concept to explore—and go from there. I take note of meaningful references to my clients and what they are drawn to, including colors, places around the world, particular eras, artists, and more. Then, I can begin putting it all together in a way that feels at once original, relevant and timeless, because I am a true believer that interiors should endure.”
For Annabelle’s Dream Registry, she was drawn to beautiful plates and glasses the most. “I personally like having a few different sets of plates to use for different moments and moods,” she shares. Annabelle found the Brindille bowl and starter plate particularly charming as a breakfast set. “I’d skip the dinner plates and go for the bowls and small plates. They’d only get prettier as they age a little bit. I don’t mind a few chips and scratches; they remind you of the memories you’ve made around the table.”
As for glassware, the D’Ascoli Donatello glasses set adds dimension to any table. Annabelle insists, “No home is complete without a beautiful set of tumblers. Period, full stop.”
For warmer drinks, Annabelle makes a real case for the Oriente Italiano mug in Bario. “I prefer using mugs over cups and saucers for ease of holding them and because I find saucers are annoying,” she laughs. “It can be overwhelming when shopping for these items and people can think to themselves: ‘Do I need a full set of tea cups and espresso cups and coffee cups and where are all of these saucers going to live?!’ and I think the answer is really no. If you have space, get a full set of mugs for coffee and tea, and perhaps 4-6 espresso cups in your primary china pattern. And if you don’t have room, buy at least 4 in your china pattern and you supplement when you find pretty pieces on your travels and have a more relaxed, collected look.”
The interior designer of her namesake firm leaves us with key and very practical advice for couples making their Over The Moon Registries: “When it comes to place settings, always register for at least two more than you think you need—I personally recommend quantities of 14, but at least 10—because you want to be prepared for an item or two to break over time. For secondary items or cocktail glasses, quantities of 6-8 is just fine.”
