Sweet Home Alabama Turns 15: Shop All Of Melanie Carmichael’s Looks

Sweet Home Alabama

To celebrate the 15th anniversary of Sweet Home Alabama, Reese Witherspoon recently posted a GIF on Insta from the movie—it’s one of our favorite moments in one of our all-time favorite wedding films. You know the scene: Melanie Carmichael has just returned to her small hometown in the Deep South in the hopes of finalizing her divorce from first husband, Jake Perry. (She’s now an up-and-coming fashion designer living in the Big Apple whose taken up with political scion Andrew Hennings—he’s the son of the mayor—and after an epic proposal at Tiffany, the two are planning on getting hitched. Unbeknownst to Hennings, the bride-to-be just has to take care of this minor detail before walking down the aisle with him.)

While back below the Mason-Dixon line, Melanie finds herself at a local watering hole one night with friends from high school. She’s wearing a chic one-shoulder shirt that she designed and jeans, and just as she walks in, she runs into Lurlynn, a former classmate with her third child prominently perched on her hip. Melanie’s salutation? “Look at you! You’ve got a baby . . . in a bar!” It’s one of the best lines ever, and we’ve frequently repeated it whenever we see a kid in the vicinity of alcoholic beverages or taken our own children somewhere that might be deemed a little inappropriate. When they’re breastfeeding, you gotta do what you gotta do. (Writer Mary Katharine Ham dissects the idea that 15 years later the “baby in a bar” is a lifestyle, not a laugh-line perfectly on The Federalist. It’s a must-read for moms.) Anyway, Lurlynn’s response is almost better than Melanie’s greeting: “Hell, I got three more at home! This one’s still on the tit, so I can cart him anywhere.” The woman speaks the truth, and we love it.

In honor of this scene, Melanie’s timeless clothing choices, and to toast this feel-good rom-com’s fifteenth birthday, we’ve pulled all of the classic looks we love worn by Miss Carmichael, ahem Smooter, from the big city to ’Bama! Check them out in the slideshow below—they stand the test of time!
