Event Mastermind Stefanie Cove Reveals What Couples Are Asking For Now

By Lindsay Kindelon

When it comes to mapping out the details of your big day, the number of options can sometimes seem overwhelming—from choosing “your colors” and curating modern menu options to finding a vision that gives a nod to but doesn’t bow down to tradition. It never hurts to have a little guidance from an industry leader whose finger is on the pulse of everything new and fresh. Enter Stefanie Cove, the woman who through her eponymous event and production company, Stefanie Cove and Co., is behind champagne-soaked fetes both large and small around the globe. (You may have seen her recent orchestration: the Wyoming “Party on the Prairie” weekend celebration for newlyweds Karlie Kloss and Joshua Kushner.) Here, we tapped the L.A.-based visionary to fill us in on what couples are requesting right now, what’s inspiring her right now, and what she hopes to see more of at future weddings.

What florals and color palette are you into right now?
I’m into colors that make me happy, and butter yellow and pale blue are two of those currently. Also, I like to do a fresh take on neutrals (which are often my favorite), where we blend them together in ways that create new colors while avoiding the typical champagne, blush, and ivory cliché “neutrals.”

What are some unexpected touches that your couples have been asking for lately?
They’ve been requesting a detail to remember or including their grandparents by embroidering their initials into their veil or wedding dress. Some even do this in a more subtle way, like a letter on a headband or an earring. Other brides have been gifting matching pajamas for the kids in the wedding party with embroidery on their pockets—they can all wear matching pajamas the next morning at brunch.

What are some of your favorite specific trends/ideas that have emerged recently?Clients now often want to buy items for the wedding that also help build their own home inventory of beautiful napkins, flatware, etc.—this opens up a whole new world for us design-wise, as there are just so many more opportunities than with rentals. We have been moving from embroidery to custom printed linen napkins (think water color flowers instead of an embroidered monogram). Additionally, clients have been moving away from the over the top ceremony set up and locating more organic spots on their properties to serve as a backdrop for their wedding ceremony. We love this because we can add greenery as needed or weave subtle flowers throughout the existing foliage.

Where have you been gathering inspiration lately?
My very favorite place to find inspiration is through my travels. Whether it is a beautiful antique store in Italy or at a market in Paris. Even the landscape of Kauai brings new inspiration for events that aren’t even tropical—the green lushness and variety of plant species is just incredible.

What would you like to see more of at weddings?
Less white and green, more color, using more interesting textures, curating interesting music combinations rather than the norm and working with unique culinary inspirations.

What should brides keep in mind when planning a year from now?
One thing I am noticing already for 2020 weddings is that it seems to be a very busy year. I think couples need to focus on the destination and then finding their planner first. Let the planner start doing the research for the availability and putting the puzzle together. Don’t stress just because one month may already be fully booked. There are plenty of other dates and ways to figure this out for next year. For summer weddings, don’t forget about keeping your guests comfortable and not selecting a ceremony location or time where they will be sitting directly in the hot sun.

You recently did the Wyoming celebration weekend for Karlie Kloss—what was your favorite aspect of planning the destination affair?
One of my favorite parts was putting together the inspiration for the guest attire for the weekend. We were able to play with both Western casual and elegant prairie ideas, and everyone looked amazing.
